Machine Readable by Default
Back in 2012 Barack Obama mandated that all of the top level cabinet agencies go machine readable by default and publish a machine readable index of their public data assets in a file in the root of their webistes called a data.json file.
Presidential Innovation Fellow
In 2013 I joined the Obama administration to work on this project, helping the VA and others in publishing their data.json files, but also worked with the GSA to help understand the progress of our work, and tell the story around what was happening.
Data.json Index Still Available
So, I am pleased to see that in 2021 all of the agencies still have their data.json file up. I setup a collection to pull the data across these 15 executive agencies, and next I will do some work to analyze and visualize what is available across the data, and assess how well they are doing when it comes to keeping their public data catalogs fresh.
Feedback Loop for the Project
If you have any questions you can leave comments on the collection, or any idnvidiual agency. Feel free to ping me on Twitter at @apievangelist, or email me at
