IOW, split the functionality of the current software into two pieces (yep, two solutions here) - a web api server whose sole purpose is to serve up the data and a matching website whose sole purpose is to call the web api site and fetch the data as appropriate for display. Following a successful two sites, maybe we'll dive into how do we now leverage the web api site to feed a Xamarin app.
Left as "an exercise for the student" will be the design and implementation of the server-side site (we need that first). Given this isn't a college course, I don't mind folks working together in the least, matter of fact, I encourage it. BUT, keep in mind that the more you let "someone else" do the work, the less knowledge *you* will have. This isn't an "assignment for credit", it's an assignment for YOU to gain knowledge about YOUR chosen profession. So, if you choose to work in teams, make sure that everyone understands everything about the entire application. One of our members went through an interview recently and was asked about the entire MVC request/response life-cycle. Not a bad bit of information to have, just in case. My personal opinion is that that question was inappropriate for a "Junior" position, that's something you learn so that you aren't "Junior" anymore, but that's just me.
We WILL be doing code reviews and I intend on being SAVAGE in my reviews (just kidding - but only about the "savage" part - we will be doing code reviews). I'll be looking for a good separation of concerns here, a true SOLID application meaning there is a place for entities, domain objects, business rules, a repository for data access that will in turn feed another sort of repository that will feed the Web API portion, etc.. Think to yourself "how can I build this such that I can take any piece of anyone else's code and put it into my code and it'll "Just Work". (Hint, this is a good place for collaboration such that if everyone agrees on the interfaces for the various repositories, then all repos can be substituted for anyone else's repo...). The intention is that I'll get a NuGet.Server up and running on MSDN or someplace like that and we'll go through that very replacement process by putting everyone's pieces up as NuGet packages (which is why I made NuGetHandler available for one and all) and then fetching them down to see whose pieces we can cobble together into a working site.
Other things to think about: Will I be using "Get" or "Post" and why? Do I care about security at the moment, if so, how will I implement it and still be able to swap pieces around with other folks? How will I design my website to be SOLID so that the pieces are interchangeable at a whim.
These are real-world questions that need answering so...have fun and start researching!
Some members have had a good time digging into the Repository pattern and creating some good, workable code (we went through the code review and my comments were a matter of tweaking, not wholesale rejection). So... I'd start there, make sure everyone has a working version for the next meeting. We'll put Web API in front of the data, then use Fiddler and PostMan to watch the inner workings, which means we'll be getting into a bit of "How to Debug Your Website with Fiddler and PostMan" as a process. From there, we'll tweak it out and then, once complete, we'll either host it on an MSDN site (I have plenty of room) or some other site and start down the path of phase two - building the other site that will access the now-working server-side site.
So...BRING LAPTOPS!
