Contact this reporter via encrypted messaging app Signal (+1-425-344-8242) or email (astewart@businessinsider.com).\n \nVisit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.\n \n \nMicrosoft CEO Satya Nadella asked employees to have empathy for one another and advocate for diverse voices as people in cities across the US began to protest police brutality and systemic racism.\n \n\"This is not something that you can just leave behind when you log into work,\" Nadella said on Thursday, May 28 during an employee town hall, as shared on LinkedIn the following day.\n \n\"My feeling is that we can start by checking in with each other, ask all colleagues how they're doing and what they need, have empathy for what others are feeling.\"\n \nMicrosoft did not immediately respond to a request for more information.\n \nNadella called on employees to embrace its \"model, coach, care\" management framework, used by managers to model Microsoft culture, coach team members to reach objectives, and show they care about employees. \"We can model that behavior we need to see, coach others on how they can be better allies, and care for each other in times of crisis,\" Nadella said.\n \nBut, Nadella said, empathy is not enough, and it's incumbent Microsoft to use its position and resources to drive systemic change. He called out Microsoft's work on an initiative it launched in 2019 to drive reforms in policing.\n \nSome of Microsoft's work with law enforcement agencies has come under fire, including in March when immigrant rights groups and some Microsoft workers asked tech companies to stop sharing their technologies with Immigration and Customs Enforcement as the agency conducted raids during the coronavirus crisis.\n \nNadella in his address to employees seemed to commit to Microsoft's goal of diversifying its workforce.\n \n\"We need to recognize that we are better, smarter and stronger when we consider the voices, the actions of all communities,\" Nadella said. \"And you have my assurance that Microsoft will continue to advocate to have all those voices heard and respected.\"\n \nLike most big tech companies, including Google, Facebook, and Apple, Microsoft has had only mixed success in making its employee ranks reflect the diversity of people in society and among its customers. Microsoft's global workforce as of late last year was nearly three-quarters male, and more than half of its employees were white.\n \nMicrosoft in November released the company's first official \"Diversity and Inclusion\" report, revealing progress in hiring more people of color and women of all backgrounds, including in high-paying executive, director, managerial, and technical roles. The report also highlighted achievements in pay equity between employees in equivalent roles.\n \nExperts at the time said technology companies need to pay attention not only to who they hire, but how long those people stick around, how they are treated, and whether they receive promotions. And, they said, companies won't achieve pay equity until people of color and women of all backgrounds hold as many high-paying roles as white men.\n \nNadella called upon Microsoft's employees to take care of one another.\n \n\"My ask to each of you is to come together,\" Nadella said. \"Ask a colleague how they are doing today. Give each other grace as they're navigating unseen circumstances.\"\n\nJoin the conversation about this story »\n \nNOW WATCH: What makes 'Parasite' so shocking is the twist that happens in a 10-minute sequence","country":"US","clean_url":"businessinsider.com","author":"Ashley Stewart","rights":null,"link":"https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-ceo-satya-nadella-addresses-protests-2020-6","rank":"117","topic":"business","language":"en","title":"Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella addresses the protests across the US in an employee town hall: 'My ask to each of you is to come together' (MSFT)","published_date":"2020-06-01 16:52:32","_id":"0a22a8ca32a7ac3d79c5b58505cec096"},{"summary":"\"We're talking about roepening in one week in New York City and now we're seeing these mass gatherings over the past several nights that could in fact exacerbate the Covid-19 spread,\" Cuomo said at a news briefing Monday.","country":"US","clean_url":"cnbc.com","author":null,"rights":null,"link":"https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/01/new-york-gov-cuomo-says-weekend-protests-were-counterproductive-could-exacerbate-coronavirus-outbreak.html","rank":"162","topic":"business","language":"en","title":"New York Gov. But overcoming those nerves was worth it: Not only did the people there turn out to be \"very welcoming,\" but now, about four years later, she's been named the organization's top leader.\n \nCNCF, founded in 2015, is best known for housing the open source cloud computing project Kubernetes, which is widely used by to run large-scale applications. While Kubernetes first began within Google, the company gave it away to CNCF in 2018 so that the project could become more independent. The foundation's mission is to support developers working on open source cloud projects, with resources like certifications, conferences, and more. \n \nCNCF's previous head, Dan Kohn, will continue to stay involved in the organization as an advisor, although he will now focus his time on a public health project with the Linux Foundation. Sharma, who publicly took the post Monday, previously served as the director of technical evangelism at $2.75 billion developer startup GitLab, experience that she says will be useful in her new role. \n \n\"Being involved [in CNCF] from the early days, I've seen how it has grown and what we can do more of,\" Sharma told Business Insider. \"In addition, when working with GitLab, I was fortunate to work with end users who were very diverse, and from all kinds of companies. That has given me a perspective on different needs people have in cloud native.\"\n \nSharma's career, including joining CNCF in its early days\n \nWhile Sharma started her career at Google, she first joined CNCF when she was working at the software monitoring startup LightStep and contributing to the OpenTracing project, an open source project to track system behaviors.\n \nThat project joined CNCF in October 2016: It was the third project in the foundation, following Kubernetes and Prometheus. \n \n\"We actually had perfect timing because Kubernetes had started becoming a big thing,\" Sharma said. \"With Kubernetes and cloud computing, the software gets more and more complex.\"\n \nThe organization has since grown significantly since then. After Sharma joined GitLab in 2018, she was elected to CNC's board to represent her company. \n \n\"Along with my own experiences as a contributor, speaker, documentarian, I've been part of this world for a while,\" Sharma said, \"And I believe this past work and knowledge is going to help me bring about the second wave of cloud native.\"\n \nAt GitLab, she built up a technical evangelism team, which has become a \"critical\" team at the company to promote its technology and other tools developers can use. \n \n\"It's been a highlight of my career,\" Sharma said. \"I'm so proud of the folks I put together. They're all evangelists, really passionate engineers who spend a lot of time in open source.\"\n \nSharma had originally planned to stay at GitLab for a few more years, but she also loved the CNCF community.\n \n\"It took me in, and I built this career,\" Sharma said. \"I think this is a unique time especially with the pandemic going on where our daily lives have been changed.\"\n \nThe foundation has already had to make some changes. One of CNCF's biggest conferences — KubeCon, which brings together thousands of people in the Kubernetes community— was originally supposed to take place in Amsterdam earlier this year, but it was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Now, it's going all virtual in August.\n \nSharma's goal is 'to listen and to learn'\n \nAs CNCF's general manager, Sharma says her top priority is \"to listen and to learn\" from the community.\n \nShe has always maintained a \"virtual open door policy,\" she says, which means that she's open to people messaging her on Twitter to ask questions and share feedback. She also likes scheduling times with users to video chat or talk on the phone. \n \nOne of her first challenges will planning the aforementioned virtual KubeCon. \n \nWith the coronavirus pandemic happening, Sharma says the foundation needs to find ways to help users as they rely more on cloud applications run by CNCF's projects. \n \n\"The current time with the pandemic has taught us a lot about what needs will come up for our organization,\" Sharma said. \"Digital consumption is off the charts. That means more complex, bigger systems. That means more need for cloud native and more need for education. All of that is happening now and we need to support that.\"\n\nSEE ALSO: A tech veteran who led her last company through a sale and skyrocketing success was recruited as CEO of $641 million search startup Algolia to scale it through 'hypergrowth'\n \nJoin the conversation about this story »\n \nNOW WATCH: How waste is dealt with on the world's largest cruise ship","country":"US","clean_url":"businessinsider.com","author":"Rosalie Chan","rights":null,"link":"https://www.businessinsider.com/priyanka-sharma-gitlab-head-cloud-native-computing-foundation-kubernetes-2020-5","rank":"117","topic":"business","language":"en","title":"A former director of $2.75 billion GitLab is now heading up the influential foundation that's home to Kubernetes, the widely-used cloud computing project started at Google","published_date":"2020-06-01 16:00:00","_id":"b36c6f0ec828814971948f2acec749ff"},{"summary":"U.S. stocks struggled for direction on Monday as investors weighed prospects of a post-pandemic economic recovery against protests across the country over race and an ongoing standoff between Washington and Beijing.","country":"US","clean_url":"reuters.com","author":null,"rights":"All rights reserved. The memo was sent on Friday evening as the unrest intensified. \"Over the long-term, I'm hopeful we can work together to create a better, more just society.\"\n \nIn the memo, the 47-year-old technology executive urged Google employees to make use of mental health support provided by the company as well as other support sessions provided by people of color working at the company. Google also set up an internal donation drive, the proceeds of which Pichai said will go \"to support organizations on the frontlines of racial justice.\"\n \nOn Sunday, Google also added a short message to its homepage, writing that \"we stand in support of racial equality, and all those who search for it.\" Google also postponed the launch of its latest Android operating system beta. \"Now is not the the right time to hold a launch event and celebrate,\" Android head Hiroshi Lockheimer wrote in a separate email to employees.\n \n \n \t\t\n \t\t\tToday on US Google \u0026 YouTube homepages we share our support for racial equality in solidarity with the Black community and in memory of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery \u0026 others who don't have a voice. Curfews have been introduced around the country as images of escalating police brutality and protest have played out across social media, fueling further demonstrations.\n \nPichai's note to employees is relatively short and anodyne, and does not commit to supporting any concrete government policy changes. In contrast, Evan Spiegel, CEO of Snap (which makes Snapchat), sent a 2,000 word memo to employees on Sunday, The Information reported, calling for \"the creation of an American commission to address racial injustice and comprehensive tax reform.\"\n \n In mid-May, NBC News reported that Google has \"drastically rolled back\" some of its programs intended to boost diversity and inclusion at Google \"in an apparent effort to avoid being perceived as anti-conservative.\"\n \nGoogle did not respond to Business Insider's request for further comment.\n \nHere's Sundar Pichai's full email to employees: \n \nHi everyone,\n \nI realize I am emailing you just as you're starting the weekend. Like many of you I have spent the day processing emotions, and I couldn't let the week conclude without sharing some thoughts.\n \nYesterday at TGIF, I highlighted the grants Google.org made to support communities of color who are disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. We also talked about how it's incredibly unjust that in addition to bearing the burden of this deadly virus, Black communities are also experiencing a rash of violence in the U.S. The senseless deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and others have compounded the grief we're already feeling during this time.\n \nSince we spoke yesterday, emotions have only intensified. Many of us woke up to scenes of protests and arrests in multiple U.S. cities and painful headlines.\n \nIt's such a difficult moment and I sense that many of us are suffering right now. I know that the work of social progress can be long and hard, and in times such as these, we may feel like we're moving backwards. Over the long-term, I'm hopeful we can work together to create a better, more just society. Today, that is not the reality we face. So let me assure those of you who may be feeling grief, anger, sadness, and fear that you are not alone.\n \nYour Google community is committed to your safety and well-being. If you need extra support, please reach out to your managers or make use of the resources at go/mentalhealth. Additionally we have some incredible resources created by and for our Black+ Googlers, including virtual support sessions. And for allies who are looking for ways to help, please check out these resources instead of asking our Black community what you can do.\n \nFor those who want to help in other ways, Google.org has set up an internal giving campaign to support organizations on the frontlines of the fight for racial justice -- you can donate here, and we will match donations up to the recently expanded $10k limit per Googler. YouTube is also donating to the cause and we'll be sharing a message of support on the YouTube and Google homepages on Sunday.\n \nLet's continue to stand with and stand up for one another during this difficult time.\n \nHow is your company responding to the protests?
